Using a Remote Desktop Client

A remote desktop client lets you see a whole Linux desktop on a remote computer from your local computer. Connecting to Linux via SSH and X-Windows is efficient in that it uses a lot less of the remote computer's resources, but a remote desktop can be much faster if you are doing visualization on the remote computer from off campus.

  • If you use a Windows machine:
Use the Remote Desktop Connection to connect. This software is pre-installed on Windows desktops. To run it, find Windows Accessories in your Start menu, then click Remote Desktop Connection.

  • If you use macOS:
Search from for Windows App (previously Remote Desktop) at the App Store. It works just like the Remote Desktop Connection in Windows. Tip: if authentication fails, make sure your software updates are current.
